Big Bloom Theory: Flowers = Smiles

"Flowers are a species unlike any other in their ability to induce positive emotion - they may even have evolved to exploit the unique impact on humans."

This is how readers of the Independent were alerted to what all florists already know - flowers make us feel good.
In a recent edition of Life & Culture, Dr Raj Persuad extolled the virtues of research conducted at Rutgers University in New Jersey by Jeanette Haviland-Jones into how flowers affect our moods!

The study revealed 3 good reasons to give or receive flowers :-

1. A gift of flowers compared to gifts of fruit or candles gave the recipients a positive feeling which lasted days after receipt of the gift.

2. Flowers introduced a strong, positive mood and brought a "significant affiliation between strangers.

3. Regular receipt of a gift of flowers showed that not only did they elevate the mood of the recipients but they also improved their cognitive functions, in particular memory.

So there you are gents, it speaks for itself, what are you waiting for ???
